A more creative curriculum

We are working towards a more creative curriculum where we are trying to make better links with individual subjects so learning is more meaningful for our pupils. We want our pupils to continue to be motivated and enthusiastic about learning so we plan tasks that are interesting and enjoyable. This includes planning tasks outside the classroom as well as trips and visits.


Setting high expectations

We set high expectations for all our pupils and expect them to try their best always with the challenging tasks we plan for them. For specific subjects, we have support from specialist teachers to ensure we meet the needs of our gifted and talented pupils.

Debating – A selection of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils participate in the Primary Urban Debate League.


Chess – A selection of Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils participate in London Chess Classic Schools Events.


PE – A selection of KS 1 and KS 2 pupils attend a range of competitions throughout the school year.


KS 2 pupils participate in Kids Marathon – They use 10 minutes of their lunch time to run. They work towards running the distance of a marathon – 26.2 miles by the end of the academic year.


GA joggers – KS 2 pupils and staff from Guardian Angels train for Hackney Mile, City of London Mile, Sports Relief Mile and World Marathon Relay Challenge Events.


A selection of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils participate in the Tower Hamlets Book Award each year.


The curriculum

English – We are a Talk for Writing school. Talk for Writing was created by a teacher called Pie Corbett. Pupils and staff ‘talk the text’ – this is the first stage called imitation. This is followed by the innovation stage where through shared planning and writing pupils produce their own version. Finally we come to the invention stage where pupils independently write their text using their own ideas and an opportunity to show what they have learnt.


Maths – At Guardian Angels, we follow a mastery approach to Maths, using the ‘White Rose’ scheme of work. We are committed to the ideal that all children in our school, can and will achieve success in Maths.


The approach aims to give pupils a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than a set of techniques or routines to get to the right answer. It shows that problems can be solved in a variety of ways, and ensures that pupils learn in sequence – by manipulating real objects, drawing pictorial representations and using mathematical symbols before moving onto to abstract learning.


We agree with the Department of Education’s suggestion that ‘pupils should be moved on only when they are conceptually ready and that pupils who have grasped concepts will be given rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content.’


Differentiation is achieved through same day intervention, enrichment opportunities and most importantly skillful questioning by the class teacher. At Guardian Angels, we follow a mastery approach to Maths, using the ‘White Rose’ scheme of work. RE – We plan using the Resource Framework for Religious Education in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Westminster. RE is taught through the COMPOSITE MODEL which has three stages; Prepare to hear the Word, Hear and Encounter the Word and Respond to the Word.


Religious education is in accordance with the teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church. We introduce children to the whole mystery of Jesus Christ as a source of authentic growth. Such a personal relationship with God, we believe, requires knowledge, understanding and familiarity. Therefore, Religious Education in our school will be the comprehensive and systematic study of God, of life and the teachings of Jesus Christ, of His Church and of the central beliefs that Catholics hold and the basis for them.


History & Geography – We use a humanities curriculum called Prospectus. It provides a range of lessons which have exciting and creative themes and are linked with art & DT. Lessons provide high-quality experiences, which not only inspires but fully engages, motivates and excites our pupils.


We aim to develop children’s' awareness of the past and of ways in which the past is different from the present. They sequence events and objects and develop a sense of chronology. They learn how to use a range of sources of information to inform historical enquiry and organise and communicate historical information. They are encouraged to use I.T. to obtain sources of information to support their learning.


We encourage children to investigate the physical and human features of their surroundings and communicate ideas and information orally and in writing. They learn geographical skills and vocabulary, to know about different places and compare the contrast with their locality. They recognise links between local, national and international events. They use I.T. to gain access to sources of information and to classify and present evidence using spreadsheets etc.


French - Lessons are delivered by a specialist French teacher to children in KS2.


Art & Design - We aim to provide children with opportunities to experience

different approaches to art, craft and design through developing their visual perception and their understanding that ideas, method, feeling and meanings are communicated visual forms. Through investigation and exploration children will use 2D and 3D media to learn about the work of artists, crafts people and designers from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Art and Design is currently taught by a specialist teacher.


Music - Children are encouraged to respond to music individually, in pairs, in groups, as a class and as a whole school. They learn about performing, composing, they learn to listen and to appraise music from different times, places and cultures. They are provided with opportunities to evaluate and appreciate music. Music is currently taught by a specialist teacher.


PE - Children develop agility and physical co-ordination in and through physical activity - games, gymnastics activities and dance. At Key Stage 2 to extend the range to include athletic activities and swimming. P.E is currently taught by a specialist teacher.


PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) - This programme is integrated into the R.E. and Science programme. The governors and staff expect parents to co-operate with them in their implementation.

Sex Education is taught within the Personal, Social and Health Education Programme, following a set of learning intentions agreed in consultation with parents.


(Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of any sex education provided but not from any teaching of the biological aspects of human growth and reproduction implicit in National Curriculum requirements for Science)


Special Educational Needs - The School has a structured programme for identifying children with Special Educational Needs and helping them to develop to their full potential. Under the guidance of the Headteacher and with support from the LEA’s specialists. Children’s' needs are kept under continual review to ensure that they receive the most appropriate level of assistance. Parents are involved in review meetings and are consulted.


The school's policy is to admit children with disabilities e.g., impaired sight, hearing or mobility. We are unable to admit physically disabled children who require wheelchair access above ground floor level because of the constraints of the building.
